Pam Beckett dropped a report on Trisha Stanford’s desk. The normally demure analyst was uncharacteristically confident. “Yohannes Drake.”

Trisha considered the file without opening it. “Excuse me?”

“Yohannes Drake owns a mountain chalet, originally built specifically as a getaway for him and his friends. Meant to house six couples comfortably, with a variety of outbuildings and access to a nearby lake for summer recreation.”

Trisha nodded. “Sounds promising. Why was he trying to get rid of it?”

“I spoke with one of his administrative assistants with the pretext of asking exactly why he had first put it on the market, only to remove it shortly after. She was evasive, as expected. She admitted that the property ended up being too remote to be well-attended by his social circle. Later on, when his finances took a down-turn, he simply had less friends loyal enough to take with him to a mountain retreat. He considered selling it to infuse a little cash back in his portfolio, then decided not to follow through. A little investigation and quiet inquiry with the IRS revealed that he would end up owing more in taxes on the capital acquisition of such a sale than he would spend on property taxes even over a dozen years.”

Trisha’s lips turned up into a soft smile. “Ahh. So, he found a new way to supplement his income. Using it as rental property.”

“Not just this one. He’s been lending out everything from planes to property, keeping ownership while offering excellent deals to ensure 100% saturation. It’s helped him remain solvent. We don’t know how the chalet’s availability became known to Hutchings and his supporters. As we previously noted, they didn’t seem savvy enough to know where to look for clandestinely offered properties of this value on a secret market meant to be kept off the IRS’s radar.”

“I take it the chalet is no longer being offered on any of those sites?” Trisha asked.

“Correct, Ma’am. And it disappeared at approximately the same time as Hutchings’ disappearance. This isn’t conclusive, but the details match. As well, the asking price is within a standard deviation of the price range we were considering ideal for their available finances.”

Trisha looked pleased. “Where is it?”

“Ahh.” Pam’s smiled faded a little. “Unfortunately, we don’t know.”

“Excuse me?”

“Mr. Drake has exerted considerable influence to keep the locations of five of his private retreats secret from any official documentation that I’ve found. From the description, I can tell general geographic descriptions, and maybe even about where they reside in the world. For instance, I am fairly certain the second on the list is a set of apartments in a high-rise tower in Jakarta. No address, however. The chalet is clearly set in the North American Rocky Mountains. Anything more specific is maddeningly difficult to determine.”

“There has to be information somewhere,” Trisha insisted.

“From what I can tell, the only accurate information is being kept at Mr. Drake’s central residence just outside of Sacramento. An incursion may need to be conducted to obtain it. I did not attempt to approach him directly to buy it.
